Has Vanpooling’s Time Come to Our Region?
The Cheyenne Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) and the North Front Range Metropolitan Planning Organization (NFRMPO) in Ft. Collins, CO have been clearing roadblocks to begin a regional inter-state vanpool program.
VanGo, as the NFRMPO ‘s vanpool program is called, has had multiple requests over the last several years to set up vanpools running between Ft. Collins and Cheyenne as well as Ft. Collins and Laramie. Other cities that VanGo already serves with vanpools are Greeley, Windsor, Loveland, Boulder and Denver. Cheyenne MPO has also fielded calls over the years with similar interest and a Laramie to Cheyenne route has also been requested. Research from the Wyoming Dept. of Employment indicates that around 3000 people commute from Northern Colorado into Laramie County daily and approximately 500 commute from the Cheyenne area into Northern Colorado to work.
Just a few work destinations here in Wyoming that attract a substantial number of Northern Colorado workers are the numerous government offices, the University of Wyoming, Wal-Mart food distribution and Lowe’s distribution centers, the Cheyenne Regional Medical Centers, Wyoming Air National Guard, Veteran’s Administration Hospital, Laramie County School District #1 and Laramie County Community College. With the future construction of a supercomputer for the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) here in the near future it’s presence will attract other related industries so the number of workers coming from the Boulder/Longmont area will likely increase. On the other side of the border, numerous and varied jobs and businesses are attracting Wyoming workers to Northern Colorado.
